Sump Pumps

When we have heavy rains in the spring and summer, does your basement often flood? If so, installing a sump pump is a great idea as it will keep water from accumulating in your basement.

How Do Sump Pumps Work?

We find the lowest point in your basement where the water generally accumulates and first install a sump basin, also sometimes called a sump pit. These basins are often made of fiberglass or plastic. The sump pump is then installed inside the basin.

When the water level beneath your basement floor begins to rise, and water begins to fill the basin, the sump pump is activated and the water is pumped out and redirected away from your home’s foundation. When the water level falls, the sump pump automatically switches off.

Have a Sump Pump That’s Not Working Properly?

The good news is, sump pumps are fairly low-maintenance devices. But, like any other appliance in your home, sump pumps can wear out over time. That’s why it’s really important that they be tested and inspected regularly.

You don’t want your sump pump to fail when you need it most. We advise our clients to have us come in once a year for sump pump maintenance. Failure to test your sump pump could lead to flooding and water damage should the area experience heavy precipitation.

Here are some warning signs that you should call in a plumber to check your sump pump:

  • Mold or mildew smell
  • Loud or odd noises coming from your basin
  • Stuck float switch
  • No operation
